Spinach: your green friend!

Spinach: your green friend!

The villain Rufus attacks once more! Sailor Popeye, finding himself in trouble, ingests his secret weapon (a can of spinach), gains strong muscles and becomes invincible… fights Rufus and finally saves Olivia Toothpick!

Is the story familiar to you? In the world of cartoons, it was the Popeye character who propagated and publicised the consumption of spinach! Although steeped in fantasy, a fact is that it has a scientific basis!

But, after all, what makes spinach so special?

Spinach, in addition to having just a few calories (22kcal in 100g of raw spinach) has an enormous nutritional richness that gives it numerous benefits:

  • Rich in minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, manganese and zinc. They collaborate in the normal formation of bones and teeth, in muscle strengthening, in blood clotting, in fighting anaemia, promote blood pressure regulation, help reduce muscle fatigue.
  • Richness in Vitamins: A, C, E, K and B6. Because it helps to fight anaemia, aids in the treatment of eczema, improve digestive functioning; promotes vision, skin, and hair health, they intervene in the correct functioning of the immune system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, digestive system and neurological system.
  • Flavonoids and phytonutrients: act to reduce cell division in certain types of cancer, help eliminate toxins.
  • Nitrates: help and promote muscle tone.
  • Fibre content: which helps to regulate intestinal transit.
  • Antioxidant properties (due to the presence of vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, zinc, manganese and selenium) helps to prevent and reduce osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and premature ageing, it also reduces the oxidative stress caused by physical exercise.
  • Coenzyme Q10, the largest plant source of coenzyme Q10 (a compound present in mitochondria), is the energy production centre of cells, strengthening the immune system, antioxidant helping to neutralize free radicals and fight premature ageing.
  • Water: 93 to 95% of its constitution is water, having high hydrating power.

The combination of this huge agglomeration of nutrients, rich in water and low in calories makes spinach highly satisfying!
